Bruce Montoya is one of Colorado’s most distinguished trial lawyers, bringing more than 40 years of experience handling complex, high-stakes litigation. Since joining Messner Reeves in 2005, he has been instrumental in the growth and success of the firm’s litigation practice, while mentoring and developing trial attorneys throughout Colorado and across the country. Widely respected for his courtroom skill, strategic judgment, and unwavering commitment to the jury trial system, Bruce has earned a reputation as a formidable advocate both inside and outside the courtroom.
Throughout his career, Bruce has represented individuals, businesses, healthcare providers, and insurers in sophisticated civil litigation matters involving catastrophic personal injury, medical malpractice, professional liability, commercial disputes, and class actions. Having successfully represented both plaintiffs and defendants, he brings a unique perspective to every case, coupling creative problem-solving with the insight gained from decades of trial experience.
Bruce’s exceptional trial credentials have earned him membership in some of the legal profession’s most prestigious organizations. He is a Fellow of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, an invitation-only organization limited to 500 active trial lawyers in the United States. He is also a longtime member of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA), serving as President of the Colorado Chapter in 2017, and has been inducted into both the International Society of Barristers and the International Association of Defense Counsel.
His professional achievements have been recognized consistently throughout his career. Bruce has been selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America and Colorado Super Lawyers since 2006 and has been named among 5280 Magazine’s Denver Top Lawyers since 2015. Bruce received his Juris Doctor from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law and earned his Bachelor of Science from the University of Colorado. He remains actively involved in numerous professional organizations, including the American Bar Association, Colorado Bar Association, Denver Bar Association, Colorado Hispanic Bar Association, American Board of Trial Advocates, International Society of Barristers, and International Academy of Trial Lawyers.
